Arkansas Schutzhund Club

ABOUT US

The Arkansas Schutzhund Club was established in 1990 as a member club of our parent club "DVG America" (KG-Midwest Region) While our club's name reflects the old sport name of "Schutzhund" (German for "protection dog") we have evolved along with the sport into what is now the (Internationale Gebrauchshund Pruefung) or an  "IGP" club and follow the established FCI RULES. We provide a comprehensive approach to IGP dog sport, focusing on the intricate balance of tracking, obedience, and protection. Our methodology is rooted in precision and mutual trust, ensuring that both dogs and handlers reach their peak potential through rigorous, expert-led training programs.

GOALS

1. Encouraging and promoting quality training of working dogs in the sport of IGP (Schutzhund).

2. Educating the public about the sport of IGP.

3. Supporting movements that demonstrate the advantages of IGP training.

4. Working towards obtaining IGP titles with their dogs.

5. Supporting and organizing IGP seminars and trials.

6. Supporting and organizing breed surveys and conformation evaluations.

7. Promoting and demonstrating good sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, as well as fair and humane training of dogs.

Core Disciplines

Tracking

The tracking phase tests not only the dog's scenting ability, but also its mental soundness and physical endurance. In the tracking phase, a track layer walks across a field, dropping several small articles along the way. The length, complexity, number of articles, and age of the track varies for each title.

Obedience

The obedience phase is done in a large field, with the dogs working in pairs. One dog is placed in a down position on the side of the field and its handler leaves it while the other dog works in the field. Obedience is judged on the dog's accuracy and attitude.

Protection

In the protection phase, the judge’s assistant, called the "helper", helps him or her test the dog's courage to protect himself and his handler and its ability to be controlled while doing so. The helper wears a heavily padded sleeve on one arm. There are several blinds, placed where the helper can hide on the field. The dog is directed to search the blinds for the helper.
